New online tools to help businesses prepare for 2021

18 February 2020

The UK government has created several tools to help British nationals and businesses get ready for new rules in 2021 once the transition period is over.

The UK left the European Union on 31 January and has entered an 11-month transition period that will last until 31 December 2020. After this date, rules governing everything from immigration to exporting will change.

The government is urging people to start preparing now, especially those running a business. The Transition Check tool covers rules relating to living, working, travelling and doing business in the UK and EU from 1 January 2021. It asks users a series of questions and provides specific guidance based on the answers.

General information for British nationals includes:

  • Travel and passports;
  • International driving permits;
  • Border checks;
  • Mobile roaming charges;
  • Health cover and travel insurance.

Advice for businesses is extensive and there is detailed guidance for specific sectors. Key areas include:

  • Visas and work permits;
  • Accounting and reporting;
  • Copyright permissions;
  • Movement of goods and services;
  • Accessing and transferring data;
  • Labelling;
  • Customs declarations.

Users can subscribe to email updates in order to be notified about changes as new rules are decided.

The Department for International Trade has also launched two digital tools for businesses exporting goods in and out of the UK market. The free-to-use tools provide product-specific and country-specific information on tariffs, regulations and other topics in one place. The Check How to Export Goods tool provides exporters of goods out of the UK market with information such as duties and customs procedures for over 160 markets around the world.

The Trade with the UK tool is aimed at businesses exporting goods into the UK market and gives detailed and up-to-date information on topics such as tariffs, taxes and rules.
