Countdown to Small Business Saturday begins

23 October 2018

Countdown to Small Business Saturday beginsNow in its sixth year, Small Business Saturday UK will take place on Saturday 1 December this year.

The grassroots campaign supports and celebrates UK small businesses and encourages consumers to shop local. On Small Business Saturday, shoppers across the UK go out and support all types of small businesses, both online and in brick-and-mortar stores.

Many small firms take an active role in promoting the day by hosting events and offering discounts. Last year saw an estimated £748m spent with small businesses across the UK on the day.

The 2018 campaign is expecting widespread support - last year, 87% of local councils supported the campaign and #SmallBizSatUK trended at number one in the UK on Twitter.

Ahead of this year's event, the Small Business Saturday UK bus tour is giving small firms the chance to get advice and support as well as offering marketing opportunities.

The bus will set off on Friday 26 October from Blackburn and will travel over 3,000 miles across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland in the 25 days leading up to Small Business Saturday. It will visit 30 locations and will complete its journey on 28 November in Hammersmith, London.

Up to 20 local businesses per stop can apply to be a "business on board", giving them the chance to demonstrate what their offering is all about to the passing public. In addition, each stop on the bus tour will offer business mentoring services, with support from partners including Xero.

The official countdown to Small Business Saturday also includes a daily celebration of the Small Biz 100 via social media. The Small Biz 100 is a selection of some of the best small businesses in the UK; they have been chosen to help spotlight the success of such companies to raise awareness about the positive impact they can have.
